When I started doing the method, I was recovering from a torn calf muscle. I quickly learned how to correct my stance to prevent future injuries and to get the most out of each work out. My posture went from being permanently hunched over and slouchy to being upright and proud. This is the only workout routine I've done that has paid so much attention to the proper form and transformed my body so much. After just a month or so of doing KM, I had friends commenting on my toned, slimmed-down look.
Since those early days, I've only become stronger and more confident. I actually look forward to the classes, which is a huge statement coming from someone who was raised in a family that never exercised and who used to loathe working out. In a way, KM is actually meditative for me. The sessions make me focus so much on my body and the here-and-now that I'm able to leave all my outside stress and to-do's at the studio door for a solid hour. That's not to say the classes don't kick your butt. They do, in a big way. Yet every time I leave a class, I still can't wait to take the next one.
I discovered the Kinelogica Method after many unsuccessful attempts to improve my fitness through yoga and pilates. Too often I had found myself frustrated that I did not understand the point of the poses I was being asked to do, unclear on what was beneficial and appropriate to my body, and scared I was being asked to do things that weren't anatomically sound or safe. Training with KM helped me overcome this inhibiting fear of injury, because of its transparency and focus on correct form and posture.
The exercises taught in KM all have a transparent function for increasing flexibility and strength. Now when doing anything physically exerting, whether in a training context or in daily life, I check in with what I learned from KM and get myself back in the right alignment and consciously engage the right muscles. This is the best part of KM training, and the reason I kept coming back to it: It engrains habits in the body that are beneficial and universally applicable.
I started KM because I had reached an age where my metabolism was obviously slowing down. I was literally bursting out of my skinny jeans. I was also lethargic and having back problems from years of slumping over a desk. In fact, I resorted to regular visits to an expensive chiropractor to try to sort myself out. I knew I needed to start exercising to improve my health and overall well being, but I was one of those bad asses who used to laugh at people always going to the gym.
One day, I was walking along Maspeth Avenue and noticed the studio. I thought to myself, “how perfect, just what I was looking for and right in my neighborhood” but I stayed away for weeks out of nervousness. I had never worked out before. “What if I can’t handle it? What if people laugh at me?” I finally said fuck it and signed up for a barre class. Claire welcomed me with open arms and I remember the then strange twists and turns and stretches and postures; in fact, my body was shaking afterwards, but it was a good thing!
Fast forward a few years. The studio has become an integral part of my routine. The teachers have all taught me so much and pushed me above and beyond. I can now run several miles comfortably, when I couldn’t even run down the street without feeling like passing out beforehand. I can do the crow and headstand with confidence. My back and posture have improved significantly. In fact, I recently saw the same chiropractor after several years and she even commented on my much improved spinal curve!
Discovering KM Body two years ago was like a revelation for me. Previously my knowledge of exercise was limited to the basics - running, swimming, weight lifting, yoga, and pilates. Nothing felt quite right or gave the results I was looking for, which was to be lean & energized without the bulk. Claire has developed an amazing method that really works in harmony with the body to eliminate injury while sculpting form. I'm delighted to have found her!
